Scientific Name
Xenentodon cancila
The Silver Needle Nose shown above had just finished eating a large guppy. and if you look closely, you can actually see a bump in its stomach about half way from the tip of the beak to the beginning of the fins. It is amazing to watch these fish hunt small fish, catch them, then flip them around until they're properly lined up to be swallowed head first.

Appropriate Home
An aquarium with at least 50-gallons of water, an exterior power filter with a BIO-Wheel, a maximum of 1/4-inch of gravel, an aquarium heater adjusted to keep the water between 78 and 82 degrees F.

Click here for more about warm water aquariums.
This fish can live in brackish water, but lives naturally in freshwater.

Recommended Diet
Small fish the size of guppies.

Click here for more about feeding fish.

A Silver Needle Nose is best kept in a group of three or more Silver Needle Noses. They can be kept with most fish that are too big for a Needle Nose to swallow.
Click here to read about several groups of compatible fish.
Size and Lifespan
Silver Needle Noses will grow to about 14" and live for several years.
