Comments
There are six known species of Arowanas, and all of them can grow to be more 36" long. So these are fish for very large aquariums. Arowanas are often called Dragon Fish or Arrowanas.

Silver Arowana    This is the same Silver Arowana Fish that is shown in the video near the top of this page. Click on the picture to the left to see the entire fish.

Asian Arowana   This is a beautiful Asian Arowana, which is about 24" long including the tail.

Appropriate Home
Eventually a very large aquarium with at least 350-gallons of water and an exterior power filter with a BIO-Wheel, and a maximum of 1/4-inch of gravel. The water temperature should be between 75 and 80 degrees F.

Click here for general information about warm water aquariums.

Recommended Diet
When they are small, Arowanas should be fed live and frozen brine shrimp, black worms, and a few small fish.

My friend Fred used to keep his Arowanas in an aquarium with hundreds of small White Clouds.

I could see the Arowanas usually did well, but I wondered how many White Clouds were eaten by the small Arowanas.

As Arowanas grow larger they are usually fed larger fish. Silver Arowanas have been seen leaping out of the water to eat insects from trees.

African Arowanas will survive and grow on the diet given above, but this fish is also a filter-feeder, and feeding filter-feeding fish in aquariums is usually difficult.

Click here for general information about feeding fish.

Compatibility
We keep Arowanas in our aquariums for only a few weeks, until they were acclimated and ready to be shipped to our customers.

So we don't have much first hand experience about compatible tank mates for Arowanas.

Arowanas are often seen in large aquariums with large Plecostomus Catfish, large active Cichlids, large Catfish, and large Tinfoil Barbs.

Click here to read more about several other groups of compatible fish.

Size and Lifespan
All the various species of Arowanas can grow to be be very large. The maximum known sizes are given in the table above.

Their lifespans are unknown to us, but all Arowana species probably live for many years.

Spelling
The word Arowana is often spelled in alternate ways such as Arrowana, Arawana, and Aruana.
