Comments
African Tiger Fish are not recommended as aquarium fish except in very large public aquariums. These fish are relatives of the Piranha but grow to be much larger than Piranhas. Click here for more information about Piranhas.

African Tiger Fish, Hydrocynus vittatus, about 5" long. Picture taken by AquariumFish.net, Tropical Fish stores.   This African Tiger Fish
is a young specimen that was about 5" long when this picture was taken, and with good care it could grow to be 30" long.

Appropriate Home
Eventually a very large aquarium with an exterior power filter with a BIO-Wheel, and a maximum of 1/4-inch of gravel. The water temperature should be between 75 and 80 degrees F. Click here for more about warm water aquariums.

Recommended Diet
African Tiger Fish eat smaller fish and crustaceans such as live Ghost Shrimp and larger shrimp sold in supermarkets for human consumption.
Click here for general information about feeding fish.

Compatibility
have kept very few African Tiger Fish in our aquariums, and we have kept those fish for only a few weeks, until they were acclimated and ready to be shipped to the customers, who ordered them. So we don't have much first hand information about compatible tank mates. The African Tiger Fish, shown in the video at the top of this page, lives in a very large aquarium with several Bichirs and some Synodontis Catfish. Click here to read more about several other groups of compatible fish.

Size and Life Span
African Tiger Fish grow to be 30" long.
Their life span are unknown to us, but they probably live for many years.

Customer Comments

Hello, I was looking at your site when I saw the picture of the African Tiger Fish and noticed that you didn't have much info on them. I have had one for about a year now that I bought at the local pet store.

The care of these fish is very easy. They will eat anything that fits into the jaws but can become uninterested in thier food if hunting for it is too easy. They tend to like fish that can swim very quickly and will make cathing them a challenge.

Mine lives in a 55 gallon tank with an African Butterfly Fish and I have never had a problem with them not getting along. I have a Fluval 440 filter and an under gravel system with two power heads to keep the tank clean and a pleco to keep the algea to a minum.

I keep the tank at 80 degrees and add a little aquarium salt when I add water to the tank. I have found that African Tiger Fish are excelent in an aquarium and are compatable with fish to large for it to eat.

I hope this has help to inform you a little better about these beautiful fish.

Reply. Hello Misty and thank you very much for the information about your African Tiger Fish. So maybe it's a better aquarium fish than we thought it was, but ... how big will it grow?
