Macropodus opercularis

Comments
Paradise Fish are pretty, hardy, peaceful, usually very tolerant of cool water, and so they can be kept in most cool water aquariums with a temperature of about 65 to 82 degrees F. But Paradise Fish are prone to nip on Goldfish, if kept in ponds with Goldfish. Click here for more about cool water aquariums.

There are several color varieties of the Paradise Fish. The original wild Paradise Fish had both blue and red markings. Now there are Paradise Fish that are nearly solid red and another variety that's nearly solid blue. These color varieties have been produced by fish farmers.

Appropriate Home
An aquarium with at least 30-gallons of water, an exterior power filter with a BIO-Wheel, and a maximum of 1/4-inch of gravel. Blue Paradise usually don't need heated water.

Recommended Diet
Paradise Fish do well on a diet of floating flake food such as plus some of freeze dried blood worms, which are actually mosquito larvae. Both of these fish foods are available in most stores that sell pet fish. We give our Paradise Fish an occasional treat of live Black Worms and live or frozen brine shrimp. Click here for more about feeding fish. I feed these fish a few Black Worms every other day. Click here for more about Black Worms.

Compatibility
Paradise Fish are best kept in a group with at least four Paradise Fish. Good tank mates for Paradise Fish are Blue Gouramis, Gold Gouramis, Opaline Gouramis. A group of at least 6 Tiger Barbs. All Danios. All Rainbows. A school of Clown Loaches. One Redtail Shark or one Rainbow Shark. A school of Bala Sharks.

Click here to read more about several other groups of compatible fish.

Size and Lifespan
Paradise Fish can grow to at least 3.5" and live for several years.
