Customer Comments

Dear AFN,

... I also thought you might be interested in fishless cycling. You can cycle aquariums without using fish by using pure household ammonia instead. Once the cycle is completed, a compliment of fish can be added all at once, because the bio-filter is fully established and capable of handling the bio-load (because you've fed it that way with the ammonia). The details are here if you're interested.

You can paraphrase the technique (discovered by PhD Chris Cow and widely used by many including me) and put this info on your site, or link to my page [if that's easier] so that people can learn how to cycle their tanks without harming fish. The great thing is you don't have to worry when ammonia and nitrite spike because there are no fish to harm!

People will still need to buy test kits to make sure nitrite and ammonia have dropped to zero, and nitrate is showing, before buying their fish. But this is a very educational way for beginners to get started because they learn about the bio-cycle BEFORE buying fish.

Regards,
Remmie

Reply. Hello Remmie. What you say is true, useful, and well written, but technology has moved on and the new Marineland product, BIO-Spira, will instantly cycle a new aquarium. So fishless cycling is no longer needed.

Incidentally, household ammonia is a dangerous chemical, and it is safer to avoid using it.

Call Marineland at 1-800-322-1266, toll free, and find out where to buy BIO-Spira.

Two other very good products that will cycle a new aquarium are DrTim's One & Only and the EcoBio-Block family of products, which will last for years. Click on their ads on this page for more information about their products.
